Looking into the crater of Haleakala, the largest dormant volcano in the world.

Looking into the crater of Haleakalā, from the crater rim at 10,023 feet (3,055 m). From the summit one looks down into a massive depression some 7 miles across, 2 miles wide, and nearly 2,600 ft. deep. The surrounding walls are steep and the interior mostly barren-looking with a scattering of volcanic cinder cones reaching as much as 1,000 ft. high.
