Image W23 - The very rare and endangered red wolf

Red wolves are found only in captivity and experimental release areas. They are highly endangered. In the early 1970's the U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service captured all red wolves known to exist in the wild. After species analysis of nearly 400 animals captured to rule out coyote crosses, only 17 were found to be true red wolves. Of the 17, 14 became the founding animals of the captive-breeding program started in North Carolina. Red wolves are about 4 feet long, stand close to 2 feet high, and weigh 35-60 pounds. Colors range from cinnamon to almost black, with tan markings above the eyes.
