Image W33 - COCO

Black rhinoceros have excellent hearing and smell but they do not see well if objects are more than 100 yards away. This 6 year old female black rhino charges toward the edge of her enclosure at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center to investigate curious on-lookers as they pass by the rhinoceros barn. Just imaging a 2600 lb. animal charging toward you at speeds up to 30 mph! Although she "belongs" to the government of Zimbabwe, Coco resides in Texas as part of a breeding program designed to protect these incredible endangered creatures from extinction. She is currently pregnant with her second calf which will be born around August 1999, after a 16 month gestation period! With the help of places such as Fossil Rim Wildlife Park and other zoos throughout the world, intensive efforts are being made to save the decreasing population of black rhinos - they have decreased from 60,000 in 1972 to less than 2000 today. Unfortunately, poaching still continues to push this unique animal closer to extinction.
