Image W32 - White Rhinoceros

White rhinos are the second largest land mammal (2nd to elephants). They are about 13 feet long and stand 6 feet high at the shoulder. Males weigh close to 7,000 pounds with horns that can grow upto 6 ½ feet in length! They are considered threatened,as their numbers account for more than half of the total population of the five remaining species of rhino (Javan, Indian, Sumatran, black and white). Rhinos have a life span of 40-50 years. They have a good sense of smell and hearing, but their eyesight is considered poor. The name is derived from "weit," a Dutch Afrikaans word referring to their wide, square lips, rather than their color.
